Quilting for beginner-Dvd tutorial membuat quilting untuk pemula

Last night we began seeing light at the end of the tunnel. For two consecutive sessions, we have performed tasks other than the mind (and hand) numbing tasks of sanding and fairing. As I mentioned in my last post, we mounted the spray rails. Last night we rolled out a coat of pigmented epoxy.

Painting the hull with pigmented epoxy will serve two main purposes. One purpose is to get the hull a uniform color, which will make any remaining flaws more visible, and if the paint gets scratched, the pigmented epoxy will help hide the scratches. (Thats the second purpose.)

As you look at the pictures below, you will likely notice a couple of things...

- The area thats painted doesnt cover the entire bottom. This is because the painted area follows the approximate water line of the boat according to the plans. The area that hasnt been painted red will not be in the water.

-The spray rails do not follow the water line. We decided to have the spray rails follow the hull (from the top), not the water line.

-If you look really close, you may be able to see that the spray rails extend past the transoms. This is also intentional. It gave us room for error when mounting the rails to the boat; we will trim to the correct size and shape before we lay pigmented epoxy on the rest of the boat.

I hate working upside down, but this is what it seemed to dictate was the best procedure to keep the boat in alignment and true.  I mixed up small batches of WEST filleting powder (it is a milled fiber of some sort like cabosil)  and then added some thixotropic powder to it so it would hang in place without dripping.   Then I layered on 3" tape and brushed on epoxy.  The plastic cable ties used are far superior to the wires in that you can sand them and plane them in place.

It took about 4 hours to do the seams in several shifts as I could only manage about 6 seams at a time before my back and patience gave out.  Only destroyed one old pair of pants in the process from the drips.

The rest is gravy from here on out.  I plan to fill and fair the outer seams tomorrow evening and then will add layer of glass to the entire outside.  then it is sanding and installing the seats, oar locks, skeg.

Would have taken photos, but did I mention how much I hate working upside down.  Maybe this weekend I can flip it and take some photos.  Would be nice to do the sanding outdoors.

You may recall from a post I made around this time last year that a couple of friends and I make a yearly boys trip, which consists of canoeing, kayaking, camping and whatnot. (Whatnot = drinking) Last weekend we had our 2007 trip.

This years trip took place on the Namekagon River in Western Wisconsin, and it was one of the best trips yet. The current was smooth but fast in the beginning, with a surface so calm that you could see reflections of the foliage off of the river in certain places. The air temperature was a few degrees cooler than in my neck of the woods, but it was still comfortable. The water temperature was also cool, but not frigid. We had a short downpour the first day... a warm spring rain. The water was clear enough to see the bottom and we had some mild rapids on our last day. 2007 will undoubtedly go down in history as one of our best trips ever. Over the next few days, Ill post some of the highlights.

For those of you who cant wait, heres a slideshow of the trip.

Rear Transom

Progress is slow but steady. Our goal is not to have marathon building sessions, but to do a little every time. This should help prevent us from getting burned out on the project.

Yesterday we put notches in the transoms. The notches are where the stringers will eventually be placed.

Putting the notches into the stringers is a relatively precise process. First, we ran chalk lines from corner to corner diagonally across the transom (in an "X" pattern) in order to find the center of the transom. Next, we measured top corner to top corner, marking the halfway point, and bottom corner to bottom corner, again marking the halfway point. By drawing a line through the three points we measured, we have a straight vertical line from which we can measure where well put the stringer cutting points.

In order to find the stringer cutting points, we measured out from that center line, using a square, so we were sure the measuring points would be straight and drew lines accordingly. Then we played with the router, notched the transoms and generated a lot of sawdust.

Group two works meticulously on Maurices design

Group one paints the canoe as designed by Alicia

Its always good to have a back up plan! Painting of the two completed Peace Canoes were set to take place during the Maryland Maritime Heritage Festival on May 2nd and 3rd. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate for what was needed to paint outdoors. So the kids and volunteers, went back to the original place of construction the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Group one completed their painting on Saturday afternoon. A vibrant, rainbow like pattern was chosen and the kids did a great job working together to put the final touches on their Canoe.

Sunday afternoon, the second group of canoe builders came in and they had a more intricate design to carry out. Designer, Maurice, sketched out the Maryland flag, a Grateful Dead Dancing Bear, and Box of Rain logo, as group members filled in the paint. The kids had a great time and really paid attention to detail to produce a professional looking final project.

Both canoes are now ready for the launch celebration to take place at 1pm on Sunday, May 17th. The event which will be held at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, welcomes all members of the community.

I completed the lighting, making only one gaffe. I knew I wanted the switch for the light to be on the upper port bulkhead. After installing the battery, and bus bar (2 bar type with positive/negative feeds), I wanted to install the switch where the wiring could be run as straight as possible. I know I am not supposed to run wiring at strange angles and tried my hardest to keep them running parallel course and making right angle turns close to panels. When I drilled the hole to mount the switch I accidentally chose a spot 1/4 inch thicker than the switch would mount into, thus creating a 3/8" hole in an otherwise pristine panel.
small divot above switch is where the panel is too thick.

Ok, now what? Ah....the tube of grey sealant that I had just used to seal the hatches over the floatation would come in handy here. A smudge of it in the hole blends in nearly perfectly. I then went an inch lower and put the hole in only the 1/2" ply. This is a very neat installation.
